ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI

FOREST PARK

June 29, 2005

An employee of the Missouri Department of Conservation stated that Forest Park, St. Louis, rounded up and slaughtered approximately 40 geese.

UPDATE JULY 14, 2005

Mayor Slay met with Nancy Schnell and Jackie Siegal of GeesePeace St. Louis. This meeting was facilitated by Carol Epstein, an animal advocate who has worked with the Mayor's office on other animal situations. The Mayor has promised no more round-ups for the next two years.

Thank you all for writing letters to Mayor Slay. You were the voice for Canada Geese. HONKS!

(St. Louis is staying on the HALL OF SHAME because of the slaughter of geese this summer and because they did not follow through with GeesePeace in the past. We'll keep you posted)

2002:

In 2002, GeesePeace offered a comprehensive goose management program to Forest Park free of charge.  When it came time for the trained border collie portion of the plan, Forest Park withdrew from the program.  They also declined help from GeesePeace from that point forward.  They put their own egg addling and dog program in place.  (It should be noted that the border collie they used was not trained in goose management.  The qualifications of the dog handler can only be imagined.)  In 2004, 69 adult geese were sent to slaughter and 53 goslings were relocated.

THUMBNAIL VIEW OF FOREST PARK

Forest Park is located in the heart of St. Louis. It is one of the largest urban parks in the US. At 1,293 acres, it is approximately 500 acres larger than Central Park in New York. It attracts more than 12 million visitors a year.

Think about this for a moment:

How can it be possible that a park of this size is unable to hold 40 plus geese?
