MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN

2006: GOOD NEWS: Milwaukee County has decided not to kill Canada geese this year. The Wisconsin Humane Society will monitor the county's plans on a year to year basis. This is part of the message from the Wisconsin Humane Society that resulted in the halt of slaughters: "The Wisconsin Humane Society believes that habitat modification ... the continued use of nox-toxic repellents and the continued use of egg-addlings by Parks employees provides the best long-term, humane soluction to problems with geese in the parks."  The Parks Department discontinued slaughters and purchased Goose Poop Busters. Humane methods do work!

County's Method Of Removing Geese From Parks Ruffles Feathers
Fri Jul 8, 7:03 PM ET

Hundreds of geese are being rounded up and killed in Milwaukee County parks. The Parks Department said it is in response to complaints about the birds. People are used to seeing geese all over many Milwaukee County parks, but Friday at Wilson Park, there was not a goose to be found.

"I notice the geese all the time, but I just got out here, and I don't notice them now," a parkgoer said.

Many regular parkgoers consider the geese a nuisance.

"People come here to enjoy their picnics. They got geese droppings all over the place. You can't even lay a blanket on here," John Thren said.

Brian Zimmerman, of the county Parks department, said the geese pose health risks.
They fill the parks with up to 3 pounds of droppings per goose per day. But that may
not be a problem in the parks anymore.

"They were actually removed from the park locations and then sent to a food
processing plant, and then will actually be used in food pantries throughout the
state of Wisconsin," Zimmerman said.

"This is not harvest, this is slaughter," said Sharon Patrick, who lives near Wilson
Park. Patrick lives near Wilson Park and was shocked when she heard that the county had enlisted the federal government to kill the geese.

"The geese have been here for years, and people have still had their picnics, and
kids have still played. Everybody's OK, and they just came in and wiped everything
out, and I just think that's totally unacceptable. It's just totally unacceptable,"
Patrick said.

Wilson Park isn't alone. The county said the same thing could happen to geese at
many of its parks. Patrick said she will fight to try to keep that from happening.
"This is slaughter. This is just slaughter. There's nothing here except some goose
feathers here and there," Patrick said.

The federal government is actually rounding up the geese. Milwaukee County has a
contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The county said Jackson and Washington parks may be among parks where the roundup will also happen.
The Parks Department said the response to the eradication program so far has been
mostly positive.

The Wisconsin Humane Society said it is opposed to killing the geese. A spokesman
told 12 News the best long-term solution to keep the geese out of the parks is to
make changes to their park environment and surroundings.
