HUMANE METHODS OF GEESE POPULATION CONTROL:
- Great Eagle Bird Repellers are effective in large open areas such as golf courses and airports.
- Grapeseed Extract: Spray grapeseed extract on your lawn. Geese don't like the taste.
- Ovocontrol: The United States Environmental Protection Agency has approved Ovocontrol, a humane technology to control the population growth of resident Canada geese. Ovocontrol is an oral contraception for birds. Please CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION.
- Great horned owls prey on geese and other wild birds. In September 2005, a great horned owl who was blind and deaf was successfully used to scare away two flocks of geese from the Winnipeg Airport property just by hooting. Kudos to the Winnipeg Airport Authority for seeking non-lethal means of goose control and a special thanks to Manitoba Wildlife Rehabilitation Organisation for safely removing the geese from a dangerous location.
- Border Collies - It is imperative that dog handlers and collies be well trained. Injury or death resulting from harassment is a violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and carries stiff penalties.
- Egg addling - This practice is viewed by some as a lethal form of goose control because the eggs are destroyed. Most animal rights organizations endorse this method as an alternative to slaughter and gassing. Eggs are shaken and coated with corn oil. Geese will not know that their eggs have been destroyed and continue incubation. This is one of the methods used by GeesePeace, Canadian Wildlife Services, and US Fish and Wildlife Services. Canada geese, their parts, nests and eggs are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. It is unlawful to addle the eggs of protected birds without first obtaining a Depredation Permit from US Fish and Wildlife Service.
